Scots Hope to Cash In on Dome Controversy

Glasgow is readying itself to reap the benefits of having controversy surrounding the Millennium Dome super casino bid in London.

In a ranking list that the Casino Advisory Panel came out with, Glasgow was second only to the Millennium Dome. However, many speculate that the Dome, owned by Philip Anschutz, would not bag the super casino license, because of possible legal pitfalls due to his association with Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow council, predicted the city will be the one to bag the license.

"There is still some way to go in this process, but we're in it to win it and will continue to work to bring the regeneration and thousands of jobs that this project offers to our city," he said.

Glasgow scored higher than the Millennium Dome on four of the eight criteria to see the suitability of a site to host the super casino.

Prescott was reprimanded recently by the sleaze watchdog for not immediately declaring a visit he paid to the Colorado ranch of Anschutz. He was also accused of compromising the whole casino bidding process by shadow culture secretary Hugo Swire.

"Greenwich are in the unenviable position where if they are successful, their competitors will cry foul," he said.
